The Venice Carnevale

A fairy tale story lies in every image...

The Venice Carnevale is easily the world's most beautiful festival, characterised by the outrageous costumes of the wonderful Masked people. Every year, the world's best photographers and the world's most beautiful models meet in Venice during Carnevale, with the sole purpose of getting the best photos. I come here every year to meet my Masked friends, yes, I know many of them personally and we chat frequently on social media, on phone calls and we even meet up for tours sometimes. And yes...in case you are wondering, I am behind the costumes and masks sometimes, in fact, I think quite a few photographer friends have even photographed me before, without knowing I am behind the mask.

It does get pretty crowded during Carnevale, so often we try to hide and the most beautiful Masks are often found in the most elusive places.

It is said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the Venice Republic against the Patriarch of AquileiaUlrico di Treven in the year 1162. In the honour of this victory, the people started to dance and gather in San Marco Square. Apparently, this festival started on that period and became official in the Renaissance.

The Carnevale ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter, on Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday, so dates for the Carnevale vary every year, following the Christian calendar.

This is also a most busy time for me, with photo workshops to run and many private shoots to fulfil for my Venetian Masked friends as well as parties and dinners with friends and various associations. I think for the past 3 years, I am the photographer at the Venice Carnevale with the most number of private shoots. Every year, I think of brand new locations for my photo shoots in Venice and try new photo techniques for my Venetian Masked friends. Apart from the usual gondola rides, the Mystery Hotel series and the Outdoor studio with a black background without props were a big hit for the models in 2017. In 2018, we had the Venetian Movie series which proved to be an even bigger hit for the top models and workshop students There will be new locations and brand new ideas for epic shoots every year. And as usual, every photo will look like a movie still or poster.

Many of these photos are available for sale individually as prints or as hard-cover coffee table photo books and e-Books.
