The White House in the Snow 雪の中のホワイトハウス

Writer's picture: Robin YongRobin Yong

This winter, I traveled to Hokkaido to experience minimalism photography, which has filled me with sentiments of peacefulness, calmness, tranquility and serenity.

The main idea behind minimalist photography is simplicity. In this genre, composition is crucial because there is little need for distracting components in a picture. Our attention to lighting, textures, patterns, and shapes draws attention to the subject matter when it is presented in an uncluttered manner.

It's more difficult to capture simplicity in white on white snow photography than it is in sand. The tree or trees, shrubs, or other objects in the scene will influence the final result, so it is crucial to practice reading the lines and shadows within the minimalist landscape. The final stage of the print will need to incorporate all of these elements, even the subtle outlines of a hill of the snowy landscape.

Hokkaido's rural landscapes of Biei and Furano are genuinely distinctive to this area. The agriculture that was built upon it features undulating landscapes that provide breathtaking farmland scenery during the spring and summer. But in the winter, the snow-capped hills and valleys become a totally different scene altogether, a scene of simple beauty that has attracted many photographers. Trees are the most popular subiects but sometimes I think houses are under represented.

The White House in the Snow is my first attempt at minimalism photography. Initially, I was hoping for a full red or full blue barn house...but when i came across a white one, I think this has to be the one...
