Nestled within a grove of white birch trees, the Shirahige (“White Beard”) Waterfalls represent a concealed gem in the Biei Shirogane Onsen region. Alongside the Shirogane Blue Pond, these waterfalls are essential for travelers seeking to experience the renowned “Biei Blue” of the area.

Shirahige Falls is an impressive waterfall located 600 meters above sea level in the town of Biei, situated southeast of Asahikawa. The waterfall derives its name, meaning "white beard waterfall," from the striking white streams of water that cascade through the crevices of the cliff. Unlike many Japanese waterfalls, Shirahige Falls originates from an underground river.

The Blue River Bridge, also known as the Shirogane Bridge, crosses the Biei River, which is referred to as the “Blue River” due to its striking cobalt blue hue. This river flows through the vicinity of a hot spring resort. Elevated approximately 40 meters above the water, the bridge serves as an excellent vantage point for observing the Shirahige Waterfalls, which are situated directly below the bridge. The waterfalls are positioned on the right bank of the river, upstream from the bridge, extending over a length of about 40 meters and featuring a vertical drop of approximately 30 meters. The stunning contrast between the cobalt blue river and the white, beard-like cascades tumbling down the canyon cliffs is truly awe-inspiring. The sound of the waterfalls creates a vibrant echo throughout the area and generates a significant amount of negative ions, which are thought to offer health benefits. One could easily become entranced by the constantly shifting “white beard” appearance of the falls, finding endless fascination in its beauty.

The waterfalls captivate visitors with a vibrant array of colors throughout the year. During autumn, the Tokachi Mountain Range is adorned with stunning red and yellow foliage. In winter, the landscape shifts to a monochromatic scene reminiscent of an ink painting. Remarkably, even in the depths of winter, the water from the falls remains unfrozen. The trees, encrusted with ice formed by the mist emanating from the waterfalls, present a truly magnificent spectacle.

Its beauty is particularly pronounced during the winter months when frost-laden trees and glistening icicles enhance the view of the azure ravine below. Seasonal illumination events further enhance the enchanting atmosphere of the falls. Typically, the lighting display occurs from November to April, although specific dates may vary each year. Visitors are advised to dress warmly to accommodate the frigid temperatures.

Following your visit to the waterfall, consider traveling to the nearby Biei Shirogane Onsen. This natural hot spring, in operation since 1950, is abundant in minerals such as magnesium and calcium sulfate. The open-air bath provides a unique opportunity to soak in the midst of a picturesque winter landscape. To reach Shirahige Falls, Biei Station is accessible via a 30-minute journey from either Asahikawa Station on the JR Furano Line or Asahikawa Airport via the Asahikawa Airport Limousine Bus. The falls are a further 30-minute drive from Biei Station, either by car or by using the Dohoku Bus service.
